How Many Players Are on an NBA Team?

An NBA team can carry 15 players on standard contracts, plus up to three on two-way contracts — a maximum of 18. Five of them are on the court at any one time. The minimum is 14 standard contracts, and at least eight players have to be dressed and available or the game is a forfeit.

Those four numbers — 5, 8, 15 and 18 — cover almost every version of the question. The detail underneath them is where teams actually operate.

The four numbers that matter

Two-way players sit slightly outside the main roster: they split the year between the NBA club and its G League affiliate, and under the 2023 collective bargaining agreement each one may be active for up to 50 NBA games.

How many suit up on game night

Carrying a player and playing him are different things. Of the 14 players a team is required to have under contract, at least 12 must be listed as Active; each two-way player a team activates raises both the minimum and the maximum by one. In practice a team dresses somewhere between 12 and 15 players for a given game, with the rest ruled out on the injury report.

The hard floor is eight. A team that cannot put eight available players in uniform cannot play the game — that is the rule that turns an injury-and-illness pile-up into a postponement rather than a blowout.

Why preseason rosters look much bigger

If you look up a team in September or early October and count more than 18 names, nothing is wrong. Teams are allowed up to 21 players during the offseason and training camp, and two-way players count toward that 21. The extra bodies are mostly on non-guaranteed deals: camp invitees competing for the last standard spot, or players the club wants a longer look at before assigning them to its G League affiliate.

Everyone has to be cut to 15 standard contracts plus three two-ways by opening night. That is why our own 2026-27 player lists are stamped with the date they were built — they are drawn from live preseason rosters, which currently run from 15 to 22 names per team, and they shrink as camp cuts land.

The other roster questions people ask

How many players are in the NBA in total? With 30 teams at a 15-man regular-season limit, roughly 450 players hold standard contracts at any moment, plus up to 90 more on two-way deals. During the preseason the number of players attached to a team is considerably higher.

How many are on a college team? NCAA Division I men's basketball moved to a 15-player scholarship limit for 2025-26, with rosters that in practice run a little larger than an NBA team's. In FIBA and Olympic play, national teams name 12 players for a tournament roster — which is why an Olympic squad always looks a touch smaller than an NBA bench.

Frequently asked questions

How many players are on an NBA team?
Up to 18: a maximum of 15 players on standard contracts plus up to three on two-way contracts. The minimum is 14 standard contracts, which a team may drop to 13 for no more than two consecutive weeks and no more than 28 days per season.
How many NBA players are on the court at once?
Five per team, so ten in total. That has been true since the modern rules settled in and it applies at every level of organised basketball.
How many players dress for an NBA game?
Usually 12 to 15. At least 12 of a team's players must be listed as Active, and a team must have a minimum of eight players available and in uniform or the game cannot be played.
What is a two-way contract?
A contract that lets a player move between an NBA team and its G League affiliate. Each team may carry up to three, they don't count against the 15-man standard roster limit during the regular season, and each two-way player can be active for up to 50 NBA games.
Why do NBA teams have more than 18 players in the preseason?
Because the offseason and training-camp limit is 21, including two-way players. The extra players are typically on non-guaranteed deals and are competing for a standard roster spot; teams must be down to 15 plus three two-ways by opening night.
How many players are in the NBA altogether?
About 450 on standard contracts once rosters are set — 30 teams at up to 15 apiece — plus as many as 90 two-way players. Preseason totals are higher because camp rosters expand to 21.
