HoopGuess is basketball's take on the daily word-guessing format Wordle made popular — except instead of unscrambling letters, you're closing in on a real, current NBA player using stat clues. Everyone gets the same mystery player each day, so you can compare results with friends. And unlike most NBA Wordle clones, HoopGuess doesn't stop at one round: switch to Unlimited mode any time for a fresh random player, over and over, with no daily cap and no ads getting in the way.
How to play
- Type any current NBA player and pick them from the autocomplete list.
- Each column turns green when it exactly matches the mystery player, yellow when you're close, and stays grey when you're off.
- Arrows (▲ / ▼) on height, age and jersey number tell you whether the answer is higher or lower than your guess.
- Solve it in 8 guesses or fewer, then share your result.
Colors and arrows, explained
Team, conference and division only turn green on an exact match — there's no partial credit for "close" teams or conferences. Position works the same way for almost every player in the pool, since it's tracked as a simple Guard / Forward / Center. The three numeric columns behave differently: height, age and jersey number turn yellow whenever your guess is within a couple of units of the answer, even if it isn't exact, and an arrow (▲ higher, ▼ lower) tells you which direction to move next. Use those three columns to binary-search your way to the answer.
A good opening guess
Start with a versatile, "average" player — someone who sits near the middle of the league on height, age and jersey number, like a rotation wing. That gives you readable arrows on all three numeric columns right away instead of a guess that's already at the extreme. From there, read the categorical clues first: conference halves the league, division narrows it to five teams, and position buckets it further. Then let the up/down arrows on height and age binary-search the rest. Jersey number is often the clue that pins down the exact player once you're down to a handful of candidates.
Watch out for the name traps
The NBA has more near-identical names than you'd think, and the autocomplete list won't save you from picking the wrong one. Jalen and Jaylen and Jaylin are three different spellings that show up on three different players in a given season — double-check the spelling (and the headshot next to the name) before you lock in a guess, especially late in a round when a wasted guess really costs you. The same goes for shared last names on different teams; use the team/position clues already on your board to make sure you're picking the player you actually mean.
Daily vs. Unlimited
The daily game gives everyone the same mystery player for 24 hours — it's the version worth sharing and comparing streaks on. Unlimited mode is for practice and pure fun: every round is a new random player, there's no cap on how many you play, and it doesn't touch your daily streak. Play daily for the shared puzzle, play unlimited to actually get better at reading the clues fast.
